Final Updates: Final Project Documentation

Image
Proposal/Abstract:   My original proposal last week included some things that I didn't end up adding, and didn't include some things that I did end up adding to my project. The original proposal was to add multiple cameras to my animation of a frog jumping across the lily pads in a pond.  Research / Pre-Production:  Since this was also my midterm project, I have basically been slowly adding on to it since close to the beginning of the semester (Week 5/6). I used the original bouncing ball tutorial to help me with a lot of elements of this project, considering I didn't have any experience with animation until I completed that tutorial. I didn't necessarily have an end-plan when I first started this early on in the semester, since I was essentially adding onto it with each weekly exercise that we did. However, throughout the semester I referred back to the tutorial and exercises (assignments involving NURBS models, materials/textures, lighting, motion path animation, etc....

Week 11/12 Updates: Final Project Proposal

Image
The last two weeks have been super busy for me, with a bunch of tests in other classes, birthdays in my family, and getting the second dose of the vaccine which wiped me out for a couple of days. I haven't had a lot of time to work on my final project, but I know what my goals are and have been working on it a bit today and randomly throughout the week.  My plan is definitely to continue my frog scene, and add cameras to the animation I already created for the midterm. I only have one camera so far for the front view, but I'm going to add a few cameras at different angles as the frog jumps across the lily pads in the pond. Lastly, I still need to figure out how to add a face to my frog, which still isn't working. We talked about it the last time we met and I tried what you said about putting the photo in Photoshop, making sure the background is transparent, then saving the image as a .tiff image. I assigned this photo to a Phong material type, but when I assign the material...

Week 9/10 Updates: New Additions

Image
I haven't had a lot of time the last two weeks to do anything major, but I have added some new things to my midterm project/animation. The first thing I wanted to was add a background to my scene, which I was inspired to do after seeing some other midterm projects. In the screenshot below, I added a cartoon-ish background and changed the color of the plane in the scene to match the background. I am still working on getting it to match and have it blend in better with the background, I might have to find another picture for the background because this one is sort of difficult to work with.  Another difference is that for last week's assignment, I've added a directional light to give the scene some sunlight and have it match the tone of the background better. I already had a spotlight in the scene as well but I've been playing around with its settings a lot to make the pond more realistic. The spotlight functions as a way to create a light blue circle on the plane which r...

Week 8 Updates: Midterm Reviews

All of the midterm projects turned out really well and were super interesting to look at! Specifically, I'm going to give some of my thoughts on Stephannie Sipaque's and Matt Borrelli's projects as these really stood out to me.  Stephanie: I really enjoyed this one because of how realistic and simple it looks, but there is actually a lot of great attention to detail when you look closer! The matching textures of the table and chairs, the shadows of the chair on the floor, the floor's tile pattern, and of course the fruit bowl and teapot are all very well done. All of these details make the overall scene very pleasing to the eye and I could see it being in a video game of some sort for sure. The only advice I have is about the plates, which already look great but can definitely have a bit more texture to match the rest of the scene just a bit better. I'm interested to see what else you do with the scene, because I think it could look really cool in action with some s...

Week 7 Updates: Midterm Exam

Image
Proposal Abstract For the midterm, I had a lot of plans that I wasn't exactly able to figure out how to articulate yet. I talked about my plan in my last post, which was to create a scene of a pond, with a frog-faced sphere shape hopping across four lily pads in the water.  Production Log My general ideas/plans going into the project were: - Use the NURBS primitive cylinder shape to create the 4 lily pads, make them flat and position them so that they look like they're sitting on top the water. Spread them out across the pond but make them close enough for the frog to hop between them.  - Make a NURBS primitive plane and make it a light blue color. Add a phong texture and adjust the setting to make it look more like water. Ex. Play around with the specular's shading and color to make it look as though the sun is reflecting off of the water. - Use a NURBS primitive sphere shape for the frog, make it small enough to fit on the lily pads. Then, follow the instructions from the...

Week 6 Updates: Exercise + Starting Mid-term

Image
This past week, I started working on a scene for class 6's exercise, which will also eventually turn into my midterm. I used the bouncing ball tutorial as well as the fruit bowl tutorial to help me accomplish some of the things I wanted to do. For example, I went back to the tutorials to help me add a spotlight to focus only on the objects in the scene, and also used them to help me assign different colors and texture to different objects. The scene is essentially just a pond with 4 lily pads scattered throughout it as of right now, but the end goal is to add a shape that resembles a frog and have the frog hop across each lily pad, and end with it hopping off the screen. I've just been working on setting up the scene, positioning the spotlight correctly, and playing around with the shading so far. I still need to figure out how to attach a photo of a frog to the black sphere in the picture below, like we did in the bouncing ball tutorial. I followed the exact same steps from th...

Week 5 Updates: Tutorial Complete!

Image
This week, I finished Chapter 3 of the tutorial and went back to Chapter 2 to fix the issue with my squash and stretch (explained last week). Unlike Chapters 1 & 2, I didn't really run into any issues while going through Chapter 3 of the tutorial, likely because I am finally getting used to working with Maya. Once I finished Chapter 3, I quickly went back to the squash & stretch step from Chapter 2 to redo it, and got it to work again. The final product is shown below, with the ball shown in both the squashed and stretched state: Now that I'm done with this, I've started on the 5th assignment using curves and surfaces, but I don't have many updates to share yet. I will be working on it throughout today and tomorrow but probably won't post anything on it until the end of this week (hopefully will be done with it by then!)
