Week 11/12 Updates: Final Project Proposal

The last two weeks have been super busy for me, with a bunch of tests in other classes, birthdays in my family, and getting the second dose of the vaccine which wiped me out for a couple of days. I haven't had a lot of time to work on my final project, but I know what my goals are and have been working on it a bit today and randomly throughout the week. 

My plan is definitely to continue my frog scene, and add cameras to the animation I already created for the midterm. I only have one camera so far for the front view, but I'm going to add a few cameras at different angles as the frog jumps across the lily pads in the pond. Lastly, I still need to figure out how to add a face to my frog, which still isn't working. We talked about it the last time we met and I tried what you said about putting the photo in Photoshop, making sure the background is transparent, then saving the image as a .tiff image. I assigned this photo to a Phong material type, but when I assign the material to the sphere (frog) in my scene, nothing shows up. The sphere remains grey even though it shows the frog photo in the preview for the Phong material. I don't know if this makes sense but I will show you today when we meet! I've tried several things to get it to work, and I've followed the exact steps in the tutorial from the beginning of the semester just to get an image to appear on a surface, but it isn't working. This has consumed a lot of my time every time I try to work on the project, so I haven't gotten much done with the cameras yet, but that is my next step. I've moved on to camera work for the time being, but hopefully I can figure out the problem and get it to work.

Week 9/10 Updates: New Additions

I haven't had a lot of time the last two weeks to do anything major, but I have added some new things to my midterm project/animation. The first thing I wanted to was add a background to my scene, which I was inspired to do after seeing some other midterm projects. In the screenshot below, I added a cartoon-ish background and changed the color of the plane in the scene to match the background. I am still working on getting it to match and have it blend in better with the background, I might have to find another picture for the background because this one is sort of difficult to work with.  Another difference is that for last week's assignment, I've added a directional light to give the scene some sunlight and have it match the tone of the background better. I already had a spotlight in the scene as well but I've been playing around with its settings a lot to make the pond more realistic. Week 2 Updates: Reading, Tutorials, etc.

The tutorials were pretty simple to understand for the most part, and helped me understand the basics of what to expect from working in Maya, such as how to move, rotate, scale your objects, etc. Although after reading through chapters 1-3 of "The Art of Maya" was a bit more complicated to understand, I definitely have a slightly better idea of what I'm looking at when I open the program. I was pretty overwhelmed using it for the first time, looking at all of the different features and several bars at the top, bottom, and sides of my screen. It's a lot to figure out and get used to, but having this e-book should help a lot with the process of getting used to it. I found the required pages of chapter 3 especially helpful, particularly the diagram shown on page 24. I even screen-shotted it and will put it in with this post so I can come back to look at it when I need help navigating the many different aspects of Maya.

Week 8 Updates: Midterm Reviews

All of the midterm projects turned out really well and were super interesting to look at! Specifically, I'm going to give some of my thoughts on Stephannie Sipaque's and Matt Borrelli's projects as these really stood out to me.  Stephanie: I really enjoyed this one because of how realistic and simple it looks, but there is actually a lot of great attention to detail when you look closer! The matching textures of the table and chairs, the shadows of the chair on the floor, the floor's tile pattern, and of course the fruit bowl and teapot are all very well done. All of these details make the overall scene very pleasing to the eye and I could see it being in a video game of some sort for sure. The only advice I have is about the plates, which already look great but can definitely have a bit more texture to match the rest of the scene just a bit better.
